A grandfather was holding his 18-month-old granddaughter when she fell to her death from an open window on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, according to authorities. The incident happened Sunday afternoon on the Freedom of the Seas ship, which was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The girl, who has not been identified, was reportedly playing in a children's area when she somehow slipped through an open window. She fell several stories to the deck below and died at the scene.

The grandfather, who was also not identified, was reportedly holding the girl at the time of the fall. He was not injured.

Royal Caribbean is investigating the incident and has expressed its condolences to the family. The company said in a statement that it is "deeply saddened by this tragic incident" and that it is "cooperating fully with the authorities."
