Canucks lose assistant general manager Clancey to Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Derek Clancey as their new assistant general manager of player personnel.

Clancey, 36, spent the past two seasons with the Vancouver Canucks in the same role. He was the first person hired by Jim Rutherford when he became Canucks president of hockey operations in December 2021.

Clancey has a strong track record in player development and scouting. He was the director of player personnel for the Chicago Blackhawks from 2018 to 2021, and he helped the team win the Stanley Cup in 2013 and 2015.

The Leafs are hoping that Clancey can help them improve their player personnel department, which has been criticized in recent years for its lack of depth and experience.

Clancey's departure is a blow to the Canucks, but it's a sign that the Leafs are serious about contending for the Stanley Cup.
