Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 - 5 December 2013) was a South African activist and former president who helped bring an end to apartheid. As the first Black president of South Africa, Mandela fought for equality and reconciliation, leaving an enduring legacy.
Born into the Madiba clan in the village of Mvezo in the Eastern Cape, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist who spent time in prison for his work. After his release, Mandela became president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and is widely recognized as a global icon of democracy and social justice.
