145 Km Human Chain Set For September 15 In Belagavi District

Belagavi District People's Struggle Committee To Stage Statewide Protest

Aim To Attract Attention To The Mahadayi River Dispute

A 145-kilometer human chain will be staged in Belagavi district on September 15th by the Belagavi District People's Struggle Committee (BDPSC). The protest aims to highlight the Mahadayi river dispute and demand the implementation of the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal Award.

The human chain will extend from Hirebaugagi in Chikkodi taluk to Yamakanmardi in Khanapur taluk, covering all five taluks of Belagavi district. The BDPSC has appealed to people from all walks of life to participate in the protest and show their support for the cause.

The Mahadayi river dispute has been a contentious issue between Karnataka and Goa for several decades. The dispute stems from Karnataka's plans to divert water from the Mahadayi river to address its water scarcity issues.

Goa has vehemently opposed the diversion, arguing that it would harm the state's ecology and economy. The Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal was constituted in 2010 to resolve the dispute and in 2018, the tribunal awarded Karnataka permission to divert 13.42 TMC of water from the Mahadayi river.

However, the implementation of the award has been delayed due to objections from Goa. The BDPSC has accused the Karnataka government of not doing enough to press for the implementation of the award.

The human chain protest is seen as a last-ditch effort by the BDPSC to compel the government to take action. The committee has warned that if the government fails to resolve the dispute, it will intensify its agitation.
