Celtic knocked out of Champions League after ŠK Slovan Bratislava draw
Glasgow giants Celtic have been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League after a 1-1 draw at home to ŠK Slovan Bratislava.
The Scottish champions needed to win by two clear goals to progress to the third qualifying round, but they could only manage a draw in front of their own fans.
Celtic started the game brightly and took the lead in the 12th minute through a Ryan Christie penalty. However, Slovan Bratislava equalized just before half-time through a Vladimir Weiss goal.
Celtic pressed for a winner in the second half, but they were unable to find a way past the Slovan Bratislava defense. The draw means that Celtic will now drop into the Europa League, where they will face either AIK Stockholm or Sheriff Tiraspol in the third qualifying round.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was disappointed with the result, but he praised his players for their effort.
"We're all disappointed not to have won the game," Rodgers said. "We knew it was going to be a tough match, but we created enough chances to win. We just couldn't find that second goal."
Celtic will now turn their attention to the Europa League, where they will be hoping to make a strong run in the competition.
